Retiring Craft Nitro

Nitro

We have decided to retire Nitro, our local development environment.

Nitro first launched in May of 2020, with the goal of creating a simple, fast, cross-platform development environment that was optimized for working with Craft CMS.

We’re proud of what we accomplished with Nitro, however the time has come to move on. Maintaining and supporting it has been more time consuming than we anticipated, and we need our DevOps team fully focused on Craft Cloud right now, so we can get that across the finish line.

This decision wasn’t made lightly. We know many people love Nitro (we do too!). Luckily, there are several strong alternatives, including DDEV, Lando, Laragon, Laravel Valet, and MAMP.

If you’re using Nitro and not sure what to use next, DDEV is probably going to be your best bet. It’s Docker-based just like Nitro, meets Craft’s requirements out of the box (including the option to use PostgreSQL), and well-maintained, with a large, active community around it.

Our Migrating from Craft Nitro to DDEV knowledge base article will walk you through the process of switching your existing Nitro sites over to DDEV. CraftQuest also has a great DDEV and Craft CMS Quick-Start Guide video course.

If you need any help as you switch to DDEV, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. You also might want to join DDEV’s Discord server, where you’ll likely find some familiar faces.
