April 4th—the planned launch date for Craft 3—is just around the corner! The Release Candidate stage has been progressing smoothly. Yesterday we released Release Candidate 12, bringing Craft 3 ever closer to GA-level stability.
As we head into the final stretch, we thought this would be a good time to answer some common questions we’ve been receiving.
How long will Craft 2 be supported?
These are the dates you are looking for:
- March 31, 2019 – Craft 2 will be actively supported and maintained until this date.
- March 31, 2020 – Craft 2 will received critical security fixes until this date.
Will Craft 3 be a free update?
All Craft Client and Pro licenses that are purchased before April 4 come with a lifetime of free updates, including major updates like Craft 3.
What about Craft 2 licenses purchased after April 4th?
All Craft 2 (and Craft 3) licenses that are purchased on or after April 4 will be subject to the new update policy we announced at Dot All: they will come with one year of updates (including major updates like Craft 2 → 3), and further updates can be unlocked for $39 (Client) or $59 (Pro) per year.
Will Commerce follow the same license model?
Yes, all Commerce licenses purchased before April 4 will also be grandfathered into a lifetime of free updates; and licenses purchased on or after April 4 will be subject to the new update policy.
When will Commerce 2 be released?
We will release Commerce 2 Beta on April 4 alongside Craft 3 GA. If you need access to Commerce 2 beforehand, or you are a plugin developer hoping to get started on a Commerce integration, get in touch for advanced access. We expect the beta will last about three to six months.
When will Commerce Lite be released?
We’re planning on releasing Commerce Lite alongside Commerce 2 GA.
How long will Commerce 1 be supported?
We will announce exact dates once the Commerce 2 GA release date is known, but it will follow the same template as Craft: one year of active support and maintenance following the Commerce 2 GA launch, followed by another year of critical security fixes.
When will the new Craft License come into effect?
The Craft License, our new MIT-inspired license for Craft CMS and commercial plugins, is already in effect for Craft 3, and starting on April 4th, we will apply it to Craft 2 as well.
