2023 in Review

19 2023 Review Revised

2023 is a wrap! It was an eventful year, as always: we celebrated the 10th anniversary of Craft 1.0, released several major and minor updates, added organizations to Craft Console, and hosted the 6th annual Dot All conference in Barcelona.

Beyond that, this was a big R&D year for us. We’re heading into 2024 with a slew of exciting things we can’t wait to fully unveil.

Craft CMS

We released Craft 4.4 in March, with authoring improvements like the redesigned volume folder navigation, as well as the first phase of our entrification plan with new entrify CLI commands.

Then in August, we released Craft 4.5 with another batch of authoring improvements, including element activity indicators and validation summaries.

Craft 4.6 is in the works, which will bring performance improvements, a new “Country” field type, and other minor touches.

Our main focus this year was Craft 5. We announced our vision for Craft 5 at Dot All 2022, where we said it was going to be the “biggest leap forward for content modeling since 1.3” (when Matrix was added). We had some specific goals in mind, but only a rough idea of how we were going to tackle them.

It wasn’t until May of this year that we had a solid plan in place. After working through some of the database challenges with Tobias Petry, we decided to make a drastic change to how Craft stores content. The change has enabled us to achieve all of our content modeling goals, and then some.

Craft 5 is currently in Alpha, giving plugin developers a chance to kick the tires and start porting plugins. We will be releasing the Craft 5 Beta early next year, followed by a stable release.

Craft Commerce

In September we released Commerce 4.3 and Stripe 4.0, adding support for Apple Pay, Google Wallet, Stripe Billing, and Stripe Checkout.

Commerce 5 is shaping up to be the biggest Commerce release ever, with multi-store (and multi-currency) support, as well as multi-warehouse inventory tracking.

Craft Cloud

We soft-launched Craft Cloud for a few US-based agencies this year. We’re launching in more regions and bringing more agencies into the fold early next year, and we’re planning to fully launch the service worldwide, alongside Craft 5.

Craft Cloud Dashboard

We set out to build the best possible hosting solution for Craft CMS, and we believe we’ve achieved that. We’re incredibly happy with how Craft Cloud has turned out. It’s fast, reliable, secure, and incredibly feature-rich. We can’t wait to get it in the hands of more agencies.

CKEditor

Our CKEditor plugin got a major update in April, bringing feature parity with Redactor, plus a ckeditor/convert command that makes it easy to migrate from Redactor.

The next major version of the plugin is in the works, and will bring the ability to create nested entries right within your rich text content. We think this is going to be a huge step forward for content modeling and authoring in Craft, and can’t wait to see what people do with it.

Thanks

A huge, heartfelt thanks to everyone in the community that continues to support us. We’re beyond grateful for the opportunity to continue serving you.

Here’s to 2024!
